Can you sue a doctor for disfiguring you during normal surgery?

I had a bowel obstruction and resection. The sutures didn't hold and I became septic. Instead of a 3 to 5 day hospital stay, I was in there 20 days and almost died. Then, the surgeon left me with two large pouched protruding from my abdomen so that I cannot wear shirts tucked in or a bathing suit, etc. He says, I will have to go to a plastic surgeon and pay. Do I have any recourse agains the doctor?
