Normal haemoglobin but low ferritin levels ??

Can some one please explain how you can have low ferritin (5 ng/mL) but normal haemoglobin levels? Also any ideas as to the possible cause went over my diet with my doctor and he said I should be getting enough iron from that. Gave me iron supplements and said that should fix it but I want to know what caused it?.
